Luxembourg – Canach Loop Auto-Pedestre

I did not know this before moving here, but Luxembourg is great for hiking! Beside the national trails and the well known ones, almost each village has its own local trail as well. It’s a great way to discover the country.

Finding a map which features all of the trails is sometimes daunting. In my experience, the several apps that claim to have all of the trails always end up missing some of them.

If you want to plan your day in advance, it may be useful to have access to a map before you get to the town itself, where you often find an outdoor map of the area. My favorite website and tool for planning day hikes in Luxembourg is this Geoportal. What an amazing tool! It gives you distance and elevation as well.

Canach

Canach is a small town in South Eastern Luxembourg. Depending where you are coming from, you will get the chance to drive through several other small towns are there are no main highways.

This blue loop is 12km long, so allow around 3 hours to complete. I would say that 70% of this trail is paved. As you exit the town, you will start in a section of the trail that is grassy. It feels as if not a lot of people use this trail. However, you turn right soon enough and enter a more forested area away from the main road.

As you will notice, this trail is also the starting point of other local trails which also seem to be well-marked. We will try these out another time! To find out more about the other local trails in Canach, you can research more about the Reserve Naturelle Wengertsbierg (see below)

Vineyards

In the first section of the trail, you will come natural and abandoned vineyards. Others are well maintained though, like the one below:

Nice brick walls for the vineyards

An old brick wall can be found along this first section of the trail. On your right, you will have the chance to enjoy beautiful views of Canach and of the valley.

After this section, you will enter farmlands. This part feels like it goes on for a bit longer because there is not much change to the scenery itself. Before turning right and going down towards the town of Lenningen, you will pass a small building which seems to be holding events and maybe catering during the summer. It was not open when we passed by in early May 2019, but we saw people prepping.

A small town: Lenningen

Through this hike you will pass by the town of Lenningen. This town has bus services. We did not come across restaurants on the main road, but there was a winery which says that it serves food as well! It looked open.

A colourful house with a matching car

You will leave Lenningen by going uphill towards the west. If you are lucky, you will come across peculiar sheeps and yak-kind beefs. Enjoy the beautiful view on the valley from that side

Shortly after this view, you will enter a forested area (the first time for this loop). Some of the trees are older. The path is large and quite accessible, I almost wished that it would have been a bit smaller. After a few kilometers in the forested area, you will cross a road an enter another forested area. Many trees were cut there, left to lay there. I am assuming that there was an operation to clean the forest there a bit. Keep an eye on the path, as it is not that well defined in his area.

At one point, the trail will split in two directions. Take the right one. At times of writing, some of the signage is being redone, so instead of the blue arrow pointing you where to do, there is only the white square.

Horses

When you definitely exit this section of the trail, you will walk through a farm with a lot of horses. The were friendly and we gave them some grass. As you continue on, you will be able to spot Canach again.

Rating and Review

I am rating the sentier auto-pedestre of #Canach at 6/10. We were expecting more unpaved trails. Trees were cut over some sections of the trail but I am assuming that this is temporary. The views on the valley are nevertheless scenic and the farm animals found along the way truly animate your trek. When I return to Canach, I would try out the other local loops offered by the commune, which might offer additional features.
